What to do in the Black Forest
The Black Forest is a natural wonderland: perfect for road trips, sporty adventures or simply some peaceful time with a view.
Crystal-clear lakes đź’¦
The region is dotted with lakes – some lively and large, others calm and almost magical.
- Schluchsee & Titisee: classic favourites with beaches, watersports and views of the Feldberg
- Windgfällweiher: a peaceful hidden gem tucked away in greenery
- Mummelsee: full of legends, great for dipping your feet, right along the Westweg trail.

Cycling paradise 🚴‍♀️
Hop on your bike and explore: the Gipfeltrail Hochschwarzwald offers over 140 km of mountain biking fun with 4,000 metres of altitude gain. E-bikers and gravel riders will love the well-marked trails around Schluchsee, Titisee and Feldberg – complete with over 30 rental and battery swap stations. Great for impromptu rides on scenic routes like the Panorama or Three Valleys trails.
Hiking & breathtaking views 🥾
With well-marked trails, rustic huts, and stunning scenery, the Black Forest is perfect for hikers too.
- Feldberg: the highest peak in the Black Forest at 1,493 m
- Triberg Waterfalls: with seven cascades a total drop of 163 m, a true natural spectacle
- Ellbachsee viewpoint: a panoramic trail with spectacular vistas

Thrills & family fun 🎢
The Black Forest isn’t all calm and quiet – if you're after adrenaline, head to Europa-Park in Rust, just a short drive away and a favourite with both kids and adults.
What to do on a rainy day?
Spa culture đź’¦
From Baden-Baden to Bad Dürrheim, spa traditions go back to Roman times – and they’re still going strong. Towns with “Bad” in their name didn’t get it by chance! A hidden gem for your next wellness break: the Dorint Thermenhotel Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau. As a hotel guest, you get free access (excluding the sauna) to the Keidel thermal baths, which are directly connected to the hotel.
Freiburg im Breisgau 🏰
A visit to the Black Forest isn't complete without a stop in sunny Freiburg. This vibrant university town charms with its historic old town, narrow lanes, famous "Bächle" (little canals), and the lively market on Münsterplatz. Ideal for a stroll – or for treating yourself to a slice of Black Forest cake after a hike.
Design & architecture 🧑‍🎨
Design fans, take note: the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein is one of the world’s top design museums and a great destination in any weather.

Only in the Black Forest
Cuckoo clocks & Bollenhüte 🕰️🎩
What the Swiss Army Knife is to Switzerland, cuckoo clocks and BollenhĂĽte are to the Black Forest.
Traditional cuckoo clocks with intricate wood carvings have been handcrafted here since the 18th century. A great day trip: visit Schonach, home to the world’s largest cuckoo clock – a full-sized house with a giant wooden mechanism inside.
And then there’s the Bollenhut: red pom-poms for unmarried women, black ones for the married – but authentic versions only come from Gutach, Kirnbach, and Reichenbach. Want to know more? Head to the Costume Museum.

Black Forest Cake 🍒

The region’s sweetest temptation: soft on the outside, juicy on the inside, with cherries and a generous splash of Kirsch. The Black Forest Cake is more than dessert – it’s a local icon.
Our tip: try a slice at Café & Schnapshäusle zum gescheiten Beck
A gourmet region like no other đź‘‘
Calling all foodies: nowhere else in Germany will you find more Michelin-starred restaurants than in the Black Forest. Especially famous: Baiersbronn, the small village with the highest density of starred restaurants in the world!
Also worth discovering: the wine regions Markgräflerland, Kaiserstuhl and Ortenau, full of charming vineyards, cosy wine huts and award-winning vintages. Perfect for a culinary bike ride or scenic wine tasting.
