Experiencing nature: Canyons of Switzerland

Would you like to feel the power of water and embrace the energy of such a powerful natural phenomenon? Let us take you today to a world that has been shaped by incredible amounts of water over the last thousands of years and continues to amaze visitors to this day. We are talking about three spectacular canyons in Switzerland. Obviously, the right hotel tips are also included. Let's go:

The spectacular

Swiss Grand Canyon as it is called - the Rhine Canyon (Ruinaulta), one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the Grisons. From pleasant hikes to vertiginous lookout platforms and adventurous river rafting expeditions, this is where your outdoor spirit will find anything it could wish for.

The 13 km long gorge may optionally be explored with the RhB adventure train. On Saturdays and Sundays, the scenic train runs between Landquart/Chur and Ilanz taking you to the most beautiful parts of the gorge.

Hotel tip nearby: Hotel Cresta, Flims

The Hotel Cresta in Flims-Waldhaus has been one of the most popular hotels among our members for years. No wonder, because in addition to culinary highlights and a wonderful spa facility, the hotel is within walking distance of Lake Cauma, Lake Cresta and of course the Rhine Canyon. The spectacular viewing platform "Il Spir" is only a 45-minute hike through the magical Flimserwald forest and offers a truly breathtaking view.

The Wild Romantic

It foams, it gurgles, it rushes, it swirls: over time, the meltwater of the Rosenlaui glacier has carved whimsical rock formations, imposing waterfalls and romantic caves in the gorge of the same name. The path, which is well secured, leads you through the gorge and back along the hiking trail in about 45 minutes. You can easily reach the starting or end point of the route from Meiringen by postal bus or car.

There is another gorge to explore in the surroundings of Meiringen: the famous Aare Canyon. The TouristCard grants you a discount on the entrance fee for both canyons.

Hotel tip nearby: Hotel Dakota

The Hotel Dakota, labeled as a biking, hiking and snow sports hotel, offers the perfect accommodation for active getaways in the Bernese Oberland. The cable car station Meiringen-Hasliberg is only a few steps away. Retreat to one of the spacious Superior double rooms for relaxing evenings or enjoy a drink in the newly designed Dakota Lounge. There is always a cosy chimney fire blazing during the cold season.

You will receive the Haslital Tourism TouristCard upon check-in. This entitles you to attractive discounts on various activities in the area.

The Devil's Canyon

No less than 32 bridges and footbridges adorn the picturesque Tüfelsschlucht (Devil's Gorge), which is actually not devilish at all. The numerous bridges and the waterfall bestow on the ominous sounding gorge a nearly romantic touch. We recommend a circular hike from/to Hägendorf (Tüfelsschlucht - Allerheiligenberg - Wuesthöchi - Tüfelsschlucht) to admire the beauty of this green gorge.

Hotel Tip nearby: Hotel B&B Rothrist
In the fully renovated Bed & Breakfast Rothrist, you can expect cosy double rooms, a café-restaurant and a stylish bar opened around the clock. Conveniently located, the hotel can easily be reached by train or car.
