The Rhine Awaits: Discover Switzerland's River Adventure

Rhein Swiss Tourism

The Rhine is one of Europe’s longest and most iconic rivers. Stretching 1,230 km, it starts high in the Swiss Alps, rushes through dramatic gorges, winds past medieval towns, and flows all the way to the North Sea.

Stage 1: From the Source to Reichenau

Where the mountains are steep and the villages small, the Rhine begins – actually twice. The river has two sources: the Hinterrhein and the Vorderrhein.

The Vorderrhein rises near the Oberalp Pass and flows through the Surselva before charging through the Ruinaulta – a spectacular canyon often called the "Swiss Grand Canyon". A dream for nature lovers. The Hinterrhein starts further south, passes through the impressive Roffla and Viamala gorges, and meets the Anterior Rhine at Reichenau – forming the Alpine Rhine.

Lake Toma, at 2,345 m near the Oberalp Pass, is the official source of the Vorderrhein. The trail takes around two hours and offers breathtaking views.
